SAN FRANCISCO -- A San francisco man who had served time in prison for setting the Burning Man effigy ablaze ahead of schedule in 2007 and a month later allegedly plotted to burn San Francisco's Grace Cathedral died in an apparent suicide at the Embarcadero BART station last weekend.
Paul Addis, 42, was killed when he apparently jumped in front of a westbound train in the station at 7: 48 p. m. Saturday, BART and San francisco medical examiner's office officials said.
Addis was convicted in Nevada for setting the effigy on fire before it was scheduled to be torched at the 2007 Burning Man art, music and counterculture festival held in the Black Rock Desert.
The following month in Oct. 28, 2007, Addis was found on the California Street side of San Francisco's Grace Cathedral on the top of Nob Hill with a backpack full of fireworks and other items that made officers suspicious of his intentions.
He was arrested on suspicion of attempted arson, but he later pleaded no contest to lesser misdemeanor charges in March 2008.
In spring 2010, Addis posted on his personal website about a solo show, "Dystopian Veneer, " that ran at the Dark Room at 2263 Mission St.
